If you’re into natural beauty and skincare, chances are that you’ve heard about face yoga. From brands to celebrity endorsements, face yoga has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. You can easily find apps, books and even full tutorials on YouTube and other social media channels. But how does face yoga actually work? How do you start? And can face yoga give the same results as Botox?
What is face yoga?
To put it simply, it’s a workout for your face. Face yoga actively works all your facial muscles. You may not know this, but your face has over 40 muscles! And just like you would train your body, you can also train your face to lift and tighten certain areas.
What are the benefits?
As we age, our muscles lose their volume and collagen production slows down, accelerating the loss of elasticity and firmness. While there is little data to support the evidence that face yoga can enhance our features and provide long-term benefits, it’s a natural practice that anyone can incorporate. The benefits of practising face yoga regularly may include lifted and firmer skin, a healthy glow and improved skin tone. It may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, it may also help reduce tension and headaches or eye strain.
Is face yoga the same as gua sha or face massage?
They both differ from face yoga but they are still valid practices. Gua sha and face massages are more of a “passive workout” where you use your hands or tools to massage and sculpt the skin. Incorporating these into your routine is another great way to release tension, boost circulation and redefine your face shape.
How and when do I start?
Face yoga can be started at any time, regardless of age. It’s never too late to start! Just make sure you can find the time to do it daily, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes. All you need is a light-weight face oil or a few drops of your favourite moisturiser to give your hands a nice little slip and prevent from pulling at your skin. (We love Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil).
As with any workout routine, consistency is key, and if you want to see results, you’ll need to be committed. The good thing about it is that there are a lot of free resources you can use online.
Can I get the same results from face yoga as with Botox?
Let’s be honest, with face yoga you may not get the instant results Botox can provide. However, it’s a great starting point if you’re looking for a natural alternative that won’t cost the earth. If you start incorporating face exercises into your daily routine, remember to be patient. It’s not an instant fix but with dedication, you can expect your skin to become tighter and lifted over time.
Just like yoga, face yoga should be seen as a whole holistic practice. More than simply a beauty routine, face yoga can benefit both body and mind.
