Discovered in the 70’s, Hyaluronic Acid was initially found in chicken’s crests and until recently, was still extracted from animal sources. Luckily, in the last few years scientists have developed several methods to obtain Hyaluronic Acid from some species of friendly bacteria.
Via fermentation, bacteria is able to produce Hyaluronic Acid in established conditions of temperature and pH, often referred to as ‘Bio-technology’, due to its natural origin and extraction with the help of technology.
The Molecule – Composed of two vital sugars; glycuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine – this unique combination has incredible properties. It is highly soluble in water and provides hydration and elasticity to skin tissue. Produced naturally by the skin, Hyaluronic Acid is one of the most important components of the dermis (the layer of skin between the epidermis and subcutaneous tissues). Unfortunately, the concentration of this essential molecule outside the cells of the dermis decreases with age. This is why it is so important to include this ingredient in your anti-ageing skincare regime.
Low Molecular Weight versus High Molecular Weight – There are two different sizes of the molecule itself. In High Molecular Weight (large size) it creates a film that keeps the surface of the skin elasticised and moisturised. Recently, scientists have developed a smaller version of the molecule, Low Molecular Weight, which increases the possibility of deeper penetration into the skin providing hydration and filling small lines.
The Therapeutics – When introduced into formulas, Hyaluronic Acid stimulates the skin to produce its own Hyaluronic Acid. It has been scientifically proven that a daily application keeps the skin soft, smooth and hydrated. It works even better if you apply it twice a day (morning and evening), so get moisturising!
- Stimulates the production of collagen (called the protein of youth).
- Offers protection to the skin and joints when taken internally.
- Increases skin’s elasticity and hydration.
- Possesses soothing and scar-healing properties.
So whether anti-ageing or obtaining or maintaining soft, supple and hydrated skin is your main priority, products containing Hyaluronic Acid are something to consider on your next #greenbeauty haul
