Charcoal (or activated charcoal) is one of the most sought-after ingredients for everything from our detox drinks, whitening toothpaste to skincare treatments. It is a frantic trend that shows no sign of slowing down. But is it all just hype or is it the real deal?
Scientific studies prove that this fine-grained black chalky powder acts literally like a sponge. It sucks in everything in its path with the power of a magnet. For this reason, it was once used for medical purposes. It was considered the perfect antidote for some of the most grievous illnesses, such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, conjunctivitis and even diabetic ulcers.
But this ‘trendy’ ingredient is a double-edged sword… Whilst it is very effective at trapping impurities and excess oil, it can, unfortunately, be quite harsh on delicate skin. ” I always formulate with sensitive and reactive skin in mind,” says cosmetologist, Pedro Catalá. “Activated charcoal is one of the best natural ingredients available, but it is not always well-tolerated by compromised skin types.”
A deep yet gentle cleanse
“I wanted to formulate a cleanser with activated carbon, such as Charcoal Peace Calming Cleanser, capable of absorbing and removing impurities in an effective but skin-friendly way. The problem was with the density of surfactants used in similar products to date, which tend to settle at the bottom. However, recent advancements in formulation techniques and natural ingredient availability have made it possible to create a formula that offers a deep cleansing action, suitably delicate for daily use,” adds Pedro.
Because not all versions of an ingredient are suitable for all formulas. Indeed, in the case of Charcoal Peace Calming Cleanser, it was a long search with lots of trial and error until Pedro came across a medicinal-grade version with a high level of purity. “The charcoal I’ve selected to use has been activated in a unique way that allows it to be more porous than normal, thus increasing its ability to absorb impurities,” he adds.
And it is not only the extreme purity and quality of the charcoal used in the formula that is Charcoal Peace Calming Cleanser greatest asset but its texture. Anyone who is a follower of Twelve Beauty will know that Pedro is known as ‘the master of textures’, and rightly so. This innovative cleanser starts off as a dense and deep black gel-like balm, which transforms into an exquisite oily emulsion with a light massage, yet finishes as a cleansing milk when emulsified with water.
The result is smooth, radiant skin. It is a delightful sensorial cleanse, delicate enough to be used daily. Furthermore, it is ideal for combination or congested skin types.
The perfect cleansing accessory that is also a work of art
If you are a fan of Charcoal Peace Calming Cleanser, then you will undoubtedly have in your possession The Hand Wand. This high-quality organic cotton mitt is the perfect accessory, specifically designed to ensure all the product is removed easily, without damaging skin. What’s more, each Hand Wand is hand-crafted by artisans local to a small town in Alicante province (Spain), Gata de Gorgos.
But that is not all. Its packaging proudly shows an exclusive design by the multi-award-winning artist Joan Castejón, one of the most well-known artists depicting social realism in post-war Spain.
As the artist himself explains, “The human anatomy is one of the classic elements of my artistic style, and I accepted this collaboration with Twelve Beauty because this firm and my work share many values, such as craftsmanship and the time we invest in each creation. This is why I am proud to accept this new collaboration with a natural skincare brand, as beauty is an omnipresent subject in all my work.”
