The humble jojoba plant is often overlooked and dismissed in the skincare industry. Its unparalleled benefits, versatility and sustainability are promptly forgotten in favour of trendier ingredients. However, if the latest beauty predictions are anything to go by, this resilient shrub is set to stage a well-deserved comeback. The future is bright, the future is jojoba.
The likes of Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide seem to reign supreme in the land of all things beauty, so only time will tell if Jojoba really has the power to unseat these two heavyweights from their thrones. However, most experts agree that the unique skin benefits that jojoba oil provide make this desert-dwelling shrub deserving of a place in any present-day beauty enthusiast’s arsenal. It hydrates, soothes and strengthens the skin barrier, balances combination and oily skin. What’s not to like?
“Jojoba oil was one of the first ingredients I chose to include in my formulas. Not surprisingly, I incorporated a healthy dose of jojoba into my very first product, Rewarding Body Balm. It is also present in other products, such as Rapid Eye Treatment, one of our best-sellers, along with Ideal Brightening Corrective Serum and Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil”, says cosmetologist and pharmacist Pedro Catalá, founder of Twelve Beauty.
A skincare gem
Jojoba oil’s main quality is it is biomimetic, meaning it closely mimics the skin’s natural oils. Technically it is not even an oil but a liquid wax, just like human sebum. This is what makes it so highly bio-compatible, melting instantly into skin without leaving a greasy residue behind.
It is the perfect ‘oil’ for skins that would otherwise avoid oils at all costs, such as combination, oily or blemish-prone complexions. It may even turn out to be your greatest skincare ally. It’s known to regulate sebum production, yet deeply nourishing the dry skin and balancing the skin’s essential fatty acid content.
Furthermore, it’s an excellent formulation wildcard and a wonderful companion for the rest of the ingredients. Simply because it stabilizes the formula, has a great consistency and a long shelf-life, unlike other oils. Its chemical structure makes it less prone to the typical oxidation process that can befall other vegetable oils. Because of this, when added to other denser vegetable oils, the mixture becomes much lighter and can penetrate skin easier.
Jojoba Quench Body Serum, the restorative body care solution you’ve been waiting for
“As the name suggests, I’ve included this ‘oil’ in the new Jojoba Quench Body Serum, as, from a chemical point of view, it’s a wax despite looking like a liquid,” adds Pedro.
The jojoba oil used in Jojoba Quench Body Serum is organic, virgin and cold-pressed, therefore high-grade quality. The unrefined, chemical-free extraction process it undergoes means all the natural skin benefits and aroma are preserved.
Pedro adds: “Let’s not forget the hydrolysed jojoba esters it also contains, which are emollients and are great at aiding long-term hydration. They form a protective film on the skin, improving skin barrier function while reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss).”
This silky nutritive body serum also contains Spent Grain Wax. This unusually named ingredient is a vegetable wax rich in linoleic acid (Omega 6) known again to improve skin barrier function and reduce itching along with other sensitive skin symptoms. Likewise, Pedro has opted to include Sodium PCA, an essential component of N.M.F (Natural Hydration Factor) known to restore and maintain an optimal level of moisture in the upper layers of the epidermis.
Twelve Beauty Tip: Apply Jojoba Quench Body Serum daily after showering. If you’re a fan of using body oils, apply this serum immediately on top to improve absorption and seal in the benefits of your oil.
